A few members of our volunteer team enjoying a well-earned thank you!
Why not give an hour of your time to really brighten up a local, older person’s life? Our volunteers tell us they get so much out of visiting someone; feeling useful; hearing interesting stories; becoming part of their local community; learning new skills and having new experiences. At present we are particularly keen to find volunteers who are free during the daytimes, Monday to Friday since this is when many of our members prefer a visit.
We currently have a team of around 40 volunteers from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds. Some of our volunteers are working, some studying, some retired and some new to the country. Most of our volunteers do a weekly befriending visit but some help in practical ways e.g. gardening, window cleaning, accompanying people to appointments and pushing people in wheelchairs. Some volunteers go out regularly with their member e.g. to a café, park or restaurant, others simply stay at home and chat.
Some volunteers will come to an arrangement with a client whereby they visit them on a regular basis (i.e. weekly or every two weeks) whereas other volunteers may prefer just to be ‘on call’ at certain times to undertake tasks as and when they arise.
Ideally volunteers will stay with us at least six months so that they have time to develop a relationship with the person they visit and really make a positive difference to their life. We can arrange for your volunteering to suit your availability. The skills and characteristics that we look for in befriending volunteers are:
Good listening skills
An interest in others and a good sense of humour!
All volunteers will need to provide two referees and undertake a DBS check, after which they will be matched up with a member to visit. We take time to make the matches to ensure that both parties enjoy the visits and have plenty in common! The initial visit will be with the Project Manager.
Please take a look at the documents below and download the relevant forms. You can also arrange to come into the community centre to discuss volunteering with Joanna or give us a call on 020 7604 4823. We look forward to hearing from you!
